20 Things to Declutter right now !

Hi guys! Today I want to give you a list of things you can declutter right now!

There are already a lot of videos/blog articles on the subjects, but I would like to give you the ones I love the most ๐Ÿ™‚

And remember, do it at your own pace, minimalism is not a competition !

A simple rule I like : If you haven’t used it in the last 6 months/year, get rid of it.

  • Paper towel. I have never been a fan of using paper towel, because I think it’s so wasteful. I would recommend you buying microfiber cloths, or old rags from worn out sheets for example, they work the same and are better for the environment. When then get dirty, just put them in your normal load of laundry and you are all set!
  • Candles. I love candles, don’t get me wrong but let’s be honest : you probably have too many of them. I know they were sooo cute in the store, you couldn’t resist and ended up buying 10. What I did was that I told myself I won’t buy a new candle unless the ones I have at home are gone (burned I mean, not thrown away). Try burning the ones you have first before buying new ones.
  • CDS/DVD. This was a hard one for me. I used to love collecting physical copies of my favorite movies. But nowadays, you can probably find any movies or music you want on the internet and then store them on your computer, or just stream them.
  • Magazines. We often tend to collect magazines telling ourselves we will read them later, and they start piling up and collecting dust. Go through your magazines, and only keep the ones you really love and recycle the rest.
  • Mismatched socks. I personally never had any mismatched socks but it seems that it’s a common problem for a lot of people. If your socks can’t find their partner in your next load of laundry, they probably won’t find it later. Let them go, you will much better!
  • Clothes. This was the easy part for me. Any clothes you don’t truly love (take them in your arms, and ask yourself : Does this item spark me joy or not? Do I like wearing that item?), you should get rid of it. In my wardrobe, I only have clothes I LOVE wearing ๐Ÿ™‚
  • Uncomfortable shoes.ย Do I really need to explain this one ? ๐Ÿ™‚ You don’t want anything uncomfortable in you life ๐Ÿ™‚
  • Underwear. We all ladies have underwear that are more comfy than others, and we tend to wear those ones more than the other ones. Why keeping the ones that are uncomfortable or you don’t like anymore but you keep “just in case” ? It’s time to let them go.
  • Broken clothes hangers or one you hate.
  • Bags. I might not be the perfect example on this one. I love bags, but only travel bags. I parted with some who were used, or broken.
  • Towels and linens. How many towels do you actually need? I am a bit extreme on this one, as I only have one regular towel, one beach towel and one travel towel (the microfiber type). The same goes with linen, I only have one set of linen, my favorite! And when it’s laundry day, I immediately put them back on the bed ๐Ÿ™‚
  • Hobbies – related stuff. You thought painting was your thing? So you went out and bought craft supplies and barely even used them. And they are still lying around your house, making you feel guilty every time you see them. This goes for every hobby you thought you liked but end up not enjoying. It’s time to break up with your fantasy self (see my article right here) and part with those items.
  • Kids toys. I am not a mum, but my best friend is. And let me tell you, I try to avoid their playroom as much as I can, there’s is just to many toys lying around the room, and I am having a hard time understanding why they have that much of it. I mean, how many toys does your child really enjoy playing with? I would suggest putting away in a box the toys you are sure they are not using, and if after about a month or two, if they haven’t missed the toy, you can probably get rid of it.
  • Furniture. They just take so much space on their own. Once you start decluterring, you might end up with empty drawers or cupboards and that’s amazing. Can you reorganize the rest of your stuff in the same piece of furniture? if so, just donate the furniture you don’t need anymore, and you will feel so light, trust me!
  • Pictures.ย They are everywhere ! On our phone, on social medias, they can be old pictures of you and your family, and it can be overwhelming. Here are my tips for the digital part. About once a week, I go to my photos app on my phone and delete the once I don’t need (picture of my groceries list for example), the one I don’t like (blurry, don’t make me smile). I feel way lighter after doing that. On the other side, I like keeping physical copies of pictures that only make me smile when I look at them, the ones that bring back happy memories.
  • Food.ย I am sure you are guilty of this one. You went to the store, and you bought either some food you had never tried before, food for one special recipe, and you ended up with food you didn’t like/only used one. And you kept it saying : “Maybe my kids/husband will like it” or “I’ll definitely be using it for another recipe!”. And you never did. Quick tip : Go through your cupboards, pantry and get rid of any expired food/food you don’t like/food you will never use again. What a great feeling, right ? And remember, simple cuisine is always a great value ๐Ÿ™‚
  • Mugs/Glasses/Plates. How many of those do we actually need ? My grandma and grandpa both passed away this year and we had to clean their houses. They were thousands of glasses and plates ! I really think that you should have the number of people living in your house X2 number of plates and it should be more than enough. In my appartment, I have 6 plates (which belonged to my grandpa), and 4 soup bowls, that i use on a daily basis. I have 6 water glasses and 6 wine glasses.
  • Cords/Electronics.ย I am sure a lot of you has old appliances lying around your house, not even working anymore, or waiting to be fixed, or you are just not using them. I would say have a look at all your appliances, and your cables (sometimes we have cables we don’t know even remember, and don’t know which appliance they are supposed to be with). Go ahead and declutter those charging cords and appliances you are not using. The best way to do so is to bring them to your home appliance shop, and they will recycle them properly (it’s how it works here in France).
  • Expired medication.ย You can bring them back to your local pharmacy and they will recycle them.
  • Extra pens.ย We all have too many pens, don’t we ? Go ahead and declutter the ones that doesn’t work, the ones your don’t like using.
